Review: Bissell PowerForce Helix Turbo Bagless Vacuum Cleaner 1701 (New improved version of 68C71)

Keep your home looking its best with the Bissell PowerForce Turbo Bagless Vacuum. It offers an exclusive dirt separation system that captures more fine dust to keep your filters clean longer. Cleaner air and surfaces in the home mean that allergies and allergic reactions can be reduced, helping to keep you and your family healthy. The PowerForce vacuum’s design extends the suction power and cleaning performance of your appliance. Ground-in dirt on rugs and carpets is quickly and effectively lifted away to leave behind clean, tidy floors. The five height adjustments make it easy for this Bissell bagless vacuum to clean almost any floor surface. A large capacity dirt cup allows you to get the job done with fewer stops to empty it.

BISSELL PowerForce Helix Turbo Bagless Vacuum:

  • Great for carpeting, upholstery and more
  • 5 height adjustments
  • Large capacity dirt container
  • Washable filters
  • Onboard tools
  • 2 year limited warranty
  • Helix dirt separation system
  • Helps filter out allergens
  • Model# 1701V

The Turbo 1701 model of the Bissell Powerforce Helix Upright Bagless Vacuum is slightly more expensive than the 1700 model. However, it is still an absolute bargain! The features on offer are the same as with the 1700 model but with the additional inclusion of a TurboBrush® tool (pictured below). This tool incorporates a mini air driven brush roll, which provides extra versatility for upholstery cleaning and easily stores on the unit. It also has a 2″ wider cleaning path and a slightly longer cord and much longer hose attachment.

We have evaluated over 300 user reviews of this cleaner on the manufacturer’s website. The vast majority of these reviews are highly positive and the vacuum receives a very high overall score. This model has been around since the start of 2016 and the positive reviews keep coming (we originally wrote this review in mid-2016 and recently updated this post after a follow up on Bissell’s website).

  • Excellent value vacuum cleaner for those on a budget.
  • Easy to Empty Bagless design – no cost of replacement bags.
  • Washable filter – reduced cost of replacement filters.
  • Lightweight and easy maneuverability.
  • Good suction and cleans well including pet hair removal.
  • Easy to assemble.
  • Adjustable carpet settings. Works on both carpet and hard floors. The Bissell Powerforce Helix Turbo 1701 has a ‘bare floor’ setting.
  • Additional Turbo Brush Roll, longer cord and wider cleaning head for added versatility.

  • No auto re-wind cord.
  • Only basic level of filtration (not HEPA).
  • No brush roll shut-off function.
  • Turbo Brush Roll is less effective than a motorized brush attachment. However at this price range you will not find another vacuum that provides one! The TurboBrush is air driven so, if it’s pressed too firmly into a surface, it may catch the brush and cause it to stop rotating. If you use a little less pressure it should keep rotating without issue!

The Verdict – The additional features that come with the Turbo add a significant percentage to the cost of this vacuum compared to the basic Powerforce Helix model. The TurboBrush® is useful for cleaning the sofa so you may consider the additional cost of the Bissell PowerForce Helix Turbo Bagless Vacuum 1701 worth it.

So I purchased this vacuum on Jan 8, 2017 because my last vacuum bit the dust, literally!!! So after reading the reviews I selected this one because the other Bissell I wanted was not in stock. The assembly of this vacuum was a breeze as I never even looked at the instructions, so that was a definite plus for this vacuum. The parts do feel super CHEAP, but hey what do you expect from a $60 vacuum. Using the vacuum for the first time I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of dirt that was in the canister, but it literally felt like I was just pushing my vacuum across the floor and it wasn’t grabbing anything. I have a nice grade of carpet, so I was expecting to see suction lines, but nope, nothing!!! I want to feel like the vacuum has a powerful motor when suctioning my carpet. I didn’t feel like going through the hassle of returning it for another one so I will keep it for now. But I would not recommend this one if you are looking for powerful suction. Hope this review helps 🙂

I love my new vacuum! The assembly only required two screws to attach the handle! I live in an apartment and the cord length is perfect; would also be perfect in larger homes with large rooms. It has a wide cleaning path and it also picks-up debris along the sides of a wall and in corners on carpet and bare floors. The filtration system does separate dirt particles from larger debris. The collection canister is easy to remove, empty and re-attach. The on-board-tools are very handy and work well. This vacuum is light weight and very easy to maneuver. The suction power is incredible!! This vacuum seems to be louder than the average (may be due to the intense suction power). For me, personally, I find this vacuum a bit difficult to push/pull when using on thicker carpet- possibly due to the suction power and having arthritis; perhaps, the issue may be due to my lack-of-strength. The only con is: there is no way to turn-off the brush for bare floors. I would recommend this vacuum to anyone who is searching/shopping for a new one!!

My super expensive dyson kicked the bucket and I desperately needed a new one quick. I have a Malinois that sheds like crazy and a new puppy, not to mention my 4yr old, AND my husband who tracks sand and dirt in from work every day. Yikes. It was super simple to put together. I did it in 15 minutes (Would’ve been less, but I could NOT find the screw driver!). At first, I didn’t pay attention to the brush settings for the vacuum, and vacuumed my living room and dining room. WOW. There was so much dog hair and dirt! I had to empty the compartment TWICE, because it picked up THAT MUCH. I went on to the spare room (Which was my old bedroom) and vacuumed there. Oh, jeez… That’s so filthy. Realized my mistake with the brush and set it to the appropriate carpet height, redid it. THAT’S SOOO FILTHY. I’m horrified, but incredibly relieved. It even got the gunk and dog hair built up along the wall with the brush edge! I’m excited to my house. Maybe my sneezing will stop, lol. I’m so, so, so, SO happy I bought this! Could not recommend this product more.

For years have bought Eureka Uprights and continually the beater bars stop working plus now I know they don’t clean carpets well either even when the beaters worked! With needing a new upright decided to go on Walmart’s Online Shopping Page and read consumer reviews of various upright brands. The Eureka reviews were generally terrible especially regarding failure of the beater bars to turn so obviously that issue has become even worse!!. When I read so many positive reviews of this Bissell, I bought it plus a 2-yr warranty for $5 and free shipping. Now I’ve used it. Have never seen a vacuum pull out so much cat hair, dander and dirt from my area rugs! Read this in other reviews but didn’t totally believe it until I used it on my own rugs !! They look like they just got back from expensive Oriental Rug cleaning !!! Machine is light and maneuverable but doesn’t feel cheap. Does good job also on bare floors on lowest manual setting. Very easy to assemble. Very easy to empty dirt canister and very easy to access filter. I Am One Happy Bissell Buyer !!! Clean On !!!
